Famed Faience Martres Tolosane retains the street layout of its medieval layout. It is a "circular village" and was once surrounded by a stout wall. The defensive fortifications have given way to a modern road, but the village itself retains its picturesque charm. In the eighteenth century, this quiet village was one of the great centres of pottery production. The place bustled with rich merchants and a large work force to tend the furnaces. But, the French Revolution and competition from English merchants ended the town's most prosperous era. In the twenty-first century the potteries are smaller in scale, but their output is still in demand. An ancient church, lovely fountain and a castle add to the lure of the place. The Potteries of Martres Tolosane No less than 8 factories are located in this tiny village all making beautiful pieces. Each piece is hand made and therefore unique! An ideal souvenir. Martres Tolosane is a ten minute drive from VillaNoue. It is also served by bus from Mancioux. |
