Toulouse - Lovely City on the Garonne

Toulouse is the capital city of southwest France. It is also one of the loveliest.

The rich brick facades of the ancient city's buildings perfectly set off the fantasia of wrought iron grillwork which decorate the endless balconies of the city. It is a feast for the eyes and a great place to walk.

The great central plaza of Place Capitol is one of the most beautiful in Europe. You can walk over the splendid brick bridge spanning the mighty Garonne River which swells in size as it leaves the hills around Mancioux and rushes through the city. You can walk along the river bank and sit on the 'Plage' and enjoy the view.

Large portions of the old city defenses remain, as do ancient churches and monasteries. Toulouse also has a large student population which helps keep the city vibrant. As well, it is the headquarters of one of the world's great industries - Airbus. Odds are, you flew to France on an Airbus plane.

Toulouse is also a fine place to eat! In the heart of the city sits the exciting Victor Hugo food market with its endless rows of food purveyors. But, throughout the city open air cafes and food stalls abound.

Culture and Sights

The city's premier museum occupies an old monastery and abuts the ancient cathedral whose unusual bell tower is the emblem of the city. This is the Musée des Augustines with its hidden garden in the cloisters. From prehistoric sculpture through Roman and medieval works, the display of timeless art is spectacular. Then there is the Museum of Modern Art in the former ‘Abattoirs’. The new Natural History Museum features a special attached garden.

All year round thee are special events at these museum and at the Theatre Capitol. Here the populace enjoys Opera and Ballet Programmes. The refurbished Halle aux Grains features recitals and concerts. And national stars as varied as Johnny Halliday to Roberto Alagno perform at Zenith.
